Text Box: Principal’s Penguin Post
Congratulations to Page ES!!! Our school has met the criteria for the HealthierUS School Challenge.  The program was created by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) to recognize nutrition excellence in schools.  In order to be eligible to apply, schools must be a Team Nutrition school, provide nutrition education to students, offer opportunities for physical activity, demonstrate healthy menu planning practices, and maintain an average daily participation of 62 percent or higher of school enrollment for lunches.  At the most recent Board of Education meeting, a resolution was adopted recognizing our school and 43 other elementary schools in MCPS; the HealthierUS School Challenge was also awarded to 409 schools across the United States.  Our school will be receiving a plaque, certificate, and banner from the USDA.  I am not sure when that will arrive; as soon as I have more information I will pass it along.
National School Bus Safety week is being observed this week.  The Montgomery County Public Schools is using this time to reemphasize the Ride by the Rules campaign. Ride by the Rules is specifically designed to:
Raise awareness of students and parents about the importance of appropriate behavior on school buses
Communicate guidelines for safe and respectful behavior
Communicate guidelines for reporting disciplinary problems
Provide outreach to the community with seat belt and safe driving information
Extend learning on bus safety to counseling and classroom environments
Whether your child rides the bus to and from school on a daily basis, or just for school field trips, we want and expect all of our students to know the importance of good conduct on our buses. Please remind your child that the bus driver is the “educator” on the bus and that they must respect him/her like any other adult they interact with.  It is important that we teach and if necessary, remind our children about respect on a regular basis.  Remember, riding the school bus is a privilege and not a right, so, be responsible, respectful, and Ride by the Rules!
Learn more about this campaign by visiting: www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/transportation/ride_rules/
We have approached that time of the marking period when teachers are reviewing student progress to date. The first grading period ends this Friday, October 31st, with no school on November 3rd so that teachers can complete their grades. Report cards will be distributed on November 11th and 12th during Parent Teacher conferences. Your child’s teacher will be reviewing several things with you at these conferences: How is your child doing? Are they participating in class and completing assigned work? Are they turning in their homework? Teachers will be using this time to let you know whether your child is or is not meeting the standard or requirements in a particular subject or subjects.  In order for your children to be successful, we must work together to ensure their success.
Quote of the week:  212° Actions= “As a parent, add an extra 15 minutes each day to the time you invest with your children…this is the equivalent of more than two weeks each year at work. Imagine the exponentially positive effect of investing two extra weeks each year exclusi

Text Box: Congratulations to our SEPTEMBER GRADE 5 CELESTINE AWARD WINNERS – Abigail Hines (Selvin), Grace Kenlaw (Finley) & Alina Majid (Hart).  The students were honored on Friday during lunchtime.  This award is given in memory of a community member’s mother (name of award) who wanted to honor his mother about the importance of education she instilled in his life.  Four important things stood out for this community member – good school attendance, effective effort, academic achievement, and respectful relationships with peers and teachers.  Monthly, 5th grade teachers will choose one student to receive this award.  They will be honored with a certificate and $25 Borders gift card.  CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SEPTEMBER WINNERS.

Text Box: NEW DISMISSAL PROCEDURES FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER  FOR WALKERS/CAR RIDERS!
Last year’s indoor lineup worked fairly well but due to bus riders now being dismissed from the gym and the increase in the number of students getting picked up, our system needed to be revamped. Our first attempt was not as successful as we had hoped and we believe that we have come up with a smoother and more efficient indoor lineup procedure for the year. Please be patient with us as we are working on this together.
If you stay in your car, your child will be dismissed from the usual side entrance. All children will be sitting along the inside hall wall and will listen for their names to be called. Since the policy is to stay in your cars, please understand that those who choose to do so will have their child brought out to them. This allows for a smooth dismissal and no need to have anyone get wet in the process.
Please note that ONLY children who are getting into a car will be dismissed from the side exit. All others will need to be picked up from the side door. This eliminates the crowd and allows for those who follow the “Please stay in your car” policy to pick up their child quickly.
If your child walks home, they will be dismissed from the back kindergarten door only.
If you choose to park your car and pick up your child, you will need to pick them up from the back kindergarten door only.
If your child walks home with a middle school child, another adult, or waits for a patrol to get off duty, they will be dismissed
from the back kindergarten door only.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Ms. Berner or Mrs. Dean.
