Text Box: Principal’s Penguin Post
PLEASE come to our October PTA meeting AND Reading Night tonight from 7:00-8:00 pm.  Mrs. Bridgwater, reading specialist, and I have planned an informative evening for parents with a review of our school improvement plan for reading, the MCPS reading curriculum and Page ES, and tips to support reading at home.  There will also be an opportunity for students to hear their favorite books being read by various staff members.  Also, please take the opportunity to visit the Book Fair this week (closed Thursday due to the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur), run by Mrs. DeBora King, Mrs. Amelia McGhee, and members of the PTA.  This is a great time to purchase early holiday gifts for your child, family member or even their classroom and support our school programs, all at the same time!
We would like to invite you to our third annual MATH DAY, scheduled for next Monday, October 13th, from 9:15 am-3:00 pm.  NEW this year, we will also be hosting MATH MEASUREMENT NIGHT from 6:30-7:30 pm, with a pizza dinner from 6-6:30 pm. All attending will receive 1 slice of pizza that will be served in the cafeteria while supplies last. These activities have been planned and funded by Dr. Brenda Hammond, staff development teacher, and will be supported by parents.  ALL parents and CURRENT Page students are invited and encouraged to participate! We would also like to note that the evening event is NOT a drop off event---parents MUST attend with their child.
One other event for next Monday is Open House, which falls on Columbus Day, October 13, 2008.  You are invited to visit our school any time during this special day and observe our teachers and students doing what they love best—teaching and learning!  Make sure you come to the front office to sign in and receive a name tag when you arrive. I hope to see you here on Monday---remember, this is a time to observe, enjoy what you see, and to support your child and their teacher, not a time for individual conferences.
Finally, can you believe it is already October? Since fall weather is here, please have your child dress accordingly.  You may want to watch or listen for the weather forecast because there will be days your child may need to wear a jacket, long or short sleeves, or even long pants. Also, remember to label all outerwear and personal items with your child’s name. If your child is missing any items, you are free to check the Lost and Found that is located on the stage ramp behind the All Purpose Room.
Quote of the week: 212° Perseverance= “Perseverance is not a long race: it is many short races, one after another…”

Text Box: A Message from the President
A big thank you to all of you who attended Back-to-School Night last Tuesday!  And a special thank you to those parents who have joined the PTA!  We now have 100% teacher membership in the PTA but we’re still working toward 100% parent membership.  Remember, it only costs $10 to join and you will be helping to support the activities and events that make Page Elementary a special place for all of us.

Please contact Rajini Raj, Membership Chair, at rajini_r42@hotmail.com for information about joining PTA or look for our membership table at Reading Night, October 7, or Math Night, October 13.

Please consider volunteering an hour or two of your time at the Book Fair, Reading Night, Math Day, Math Night, or International Night.  You will meet some wonderful parents and help to make these PTA events a success!  Contact Amelia McGhee, Volunteer Coordinator, at acmcghee@verizon.net or DeBora King, Book Fair Co-Chair, at dkndc@msn.com to sign up!

Text Box: Cultural Corner Yom Kippur   from  - http://www.jewfaq.org/holida4.htm
Yom Kippur is probably the most important holiday of the Jewish year. Many Jews who do not observe any other Jewish custom will refrain from work, fast and/or attend synagogue services on this day. Yom Kippur occurs on the 10th day of Tishri. The holiday is instituted at Leviticus 23:26 et seq.
The name "Yom Kippur" means "Day of Atonement," and that pretty much explains what the holiday is. It is a day set aside to "afflict the soul," to atone for the sins of the past year. In Days of Awe, I mentioned the "books" in which G-d inscribes all of our names. On Yom Kippur, the judgment entered in these books is sealed. This day is, essentially, your last appeal, your last chance to change the judgment, to demonstrate your repentance and make amends.

Text Box: NEW DISMISSAL PROCEDURES FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER  FOR WALKERS/CAR RIDERS!
Last year’s indoor lineup worked fairly well but due to bus riders now being dismissed from the gym and the increase in the number of students getting picked up, our system needed to be revamped. Our first attempt was not as successful as we had hoped and we believe that we have come up with a smoother and more efficient indoor lineup procedure for the year. Please be patient with us as we are working on this together.
If you stay in your car, your child will be dismissed from the usual side entrance. All children will be sitting along the inside hall wall and will listen for their names to be called. Since the policy is to stay in your cars, please understand that those who choose to do so will have their child brought out to them. This allows for a smooth dismissal and no need to have anyone get wet in the process.
Please note that ONLY children who are getting into a car will be dismissed from the side exit. All others will need to be picked up from the side door. This eliminates the crowd and allows for those who follow the “Please stay in your car” policy to pick up their child quickly.
If your child walks home, they will be dismissed from the back kindergarten door only.
If you choose to park your car and pick up your child, you will need to pick them up from the back kindergarten door only.
If your child walks home with a middle school child, another adult, or waits for a patrol to get off duty, they will be dismissed
from the back kindergarten door only.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Ms. Berner or Mrs. Dean.
