Text Box: Principal’s Penguin Post
I want to thank all who attended our Back to School Night last Tuesday evening and give a “hearty welcome” to all of our new Page parents and a “welcome back” to our returning families.  We had a fabulous turnout –it was truly a pleasure for me to connect and reconnect with so many parents!  Ms. Pat Scully, PTA president, and other members of the PTA have demonstrated true commitment and enthusiasm to our school and community—as a principal I feel extremely fortunate to be working with such dedicated individuals!  I am also proud to be leading a faculty that is dedicated to not only what they do but are committed to doing the best for our students---your children.  Thank you for such a great start to the 2008-2009 school year! I am convinced that with this commitment, we will reach 212° this year!!
As important stakeholders in the learning process, parents need to be informed about our School Improvement Plan (SIP) goals and how they can support their child’s success and achievement in reading, math and school climate. The school’s reading and math goals are now available for your review online via the Page ES and/or PTA websites. In the next week, we will be surveying all of our students regarding the school climate. The development of a climate goal is next on our SIP committee’s agenda.  This committee, which includes staff and parents, will be meeting again on Monday, October 20, 2008, 3:30-4:30 p.m., in the conference room—we’d love to see you there!  In addition, Ms. Elsa Bridgwater, reading specialist, and I will be presenting information regarding the reading curriculum and our reading SIP goal and action plans at next week’s (October 7) PTA meeting.  We invite your input, so please contact me at the school if you have any questions regarding this phase of continuous improvement.
Please REMEMBER that our school day begins at 8:50 am---doors open at 8:40 am for students not going to breakfast, with the expectation that students will be ready to begin instruction at 8:55 am. Students should not be here prior to 8:30 am unless they are a patrol or going to daycare.  Breakfast is served at 8:30--8:45 am—if your child is a walker, they must be here at 8:30 am to take advantage of breakfast. Please ensure that your child is walking through our doors by 8:45 am---THANK YOU!
Walk to School Day
The MCPS School Board proclaimed Wednesday, October 8 as “Walk to School Day” and encourages everyone in the community to consider the safety of pedestrians and, in particular, student walkers every day.
National Disability Awareness Month
The Board declared the month of October as National Disability Awareness Month in MCPS and encourages staff members in schools across the county to sponsor appropriate learning and community-building activities in honor of its recognition.
Quote of the week: 212° Commitment= “You cannot get what you have never had unless you are willing to do what you’ve never done…” –Mac Anderson

Text Box: A Message from the President
A big thank you to all of you who attended Back-to-School Night last Tuesday!  And a special thank you to those parents who have joined the PTA!  We now have 100% teacher membership in the PTA but we’re still working toward 100% parent membership.  Remember, it only costs $10 to join and you will be helping to support the activities and events that make Page Elementary a special place for all of us.

Please contact Rajini Raj, Membership Chair, at rajini_r42@hotmail.com for information about joining PTA or look for our membership table at Reading Night, October 7, or Math Night, October 13.

Please consider volunteering an hour or two of your time at the Book Fair, Reading Night, Math Day, Math Night, or International Night.  You will meet some wonderful parents and help to make these PTA events a success!  Contact Amelia McGhee, Volunteer Coordinator, at acmcghee@verizon.net or DeBora King, Book Fair Co-Chair, at dkndc@msn.com to sign up!

Rosh Hashanah   from  - http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday2.htm
In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, "head of the year" or "first of the year." Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. This name is somewhat deceptive, because there is little similarity between Rosh Hashanah, one of the holiest days of the year, and the American midnight. There is, however, one important similarity between the Jewish New Year and the American one: Many Americans use the New Year as a time to plan a better life, making "resolutions." Likewise, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year.
