We are reading at Page! Yesterday was our first check-in of the 100 Minutes of Reading Program. We had a great turnout, especially in second grade!  Remember, there are three things students have to do:  1. READ (or for our youngest readers—be read to) for at least 100 minutes. 2. RECORD the minutes on the calendar that was provided by each classroom teacher. 3. Mom or Dad—please SIGN the calendar and ensure that your child brings it to school every Monday morning. Students who bring in their signed calendars will get credit and be invited to the monthly reader’s celebration. Reading brings lifelong rewards!   ENJOY!!
As we all know, this is a very important election year so our students will be doing many activities related to government in America, including learning more about Constitution Day.  On September 17, 1787, the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention had one purpose for their final meeting: to sign the Constitution of the United States.   In 2004, the United States Congress passed legislation requiring every school receiving federal funds to provide a Constitution Day educational program for grades K-12 on September 17th each year.   The legislation was designed to ensure that students build understanding and awareness of the Constitution and its role in sustaining our Republic.   Our students will be celebrating Constitution Day tomorrow. Please join us as we celebrate Constitution Day 2008, the 221st anniversary of our nation's founding document. Check out this website link, www.ConstitutionFacts.com, for fun games and trivia questions about the Constitution.
Don’t forget that Back to School Night is one week from today---next Tuesday, September 23, from 7-9 pm.  We will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. in the APR for a brief summary of the PTA calendar of events and budget led by Ms. Pat Scully, PTA president.  I will then be introducing our staff prior to your visits to the classrooms.  We hope to see you there!
Quote for the Week:  “I confess that there are several parts of this Constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them. For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information, or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise.”— Benjamin Franklin, 1787

GRADE  3 PARENTS - I have begun my classroom guidance schedule in grade 3.  I will be meeting with grade 3 students once a week during the next 4 weeks.  On my first visit we worked on a counseling standard in the area of Academic Development. The objective was for students to be able to identify the study skills they use and determine which new study skill to practice.  Please check their Tuesday folder so you can discuss the study skills we talked about in class.
This week the students will work on the counseling standard in the area of Personal Development.   The objective will be for students to identify the CCD (choices, consequences, decision) decision making process and explain the importance of using the steps in the correct order.  Students can discuss with you and example of a situation where they could use the CCD process.   Mrs. I
I enjoy meeting and talking with parents and I encourage you to get in touch with me to discuss any aspect of your child’s development.  If you would like to talk or meet with me, simply call the school number (301-989-5672) and ask to speak with Mrs. I.

What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the name of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. During Ramadan, all observant Muslims observe the Fast of Ramadan between dawn (fajr), and sunset (maghrib).

During Ramadan evenings, Muslims eat small meals and visit with friends and family. It is a time of worship and contemplation. A time to strengthen family and community ties.

Ramadan ends with the festival of Eid al-Fitr.
