Wow—I cannot believe that spring is here and that tomorrow is April 1st!!  Time sure does fly by when you are having fun!  We have many things going on this month—here are just a few.  First of all, the Board of Education passed the following resolutions:

*April has been declared as the Month of the Young Child. The Board will join the county executive and County Council; the Montgomery County Collaboration Council for Children, Youth and Families; and early childhood stakeholders on April 1 at Montgomery Knolls Elementary School to proclaim the Month of the Young Child and to focus public attention on young children and their families.
* The Board, on behalf of the superintendent, staff, students and parents of MCPS, declared the observance of April as Arab American Heritage Month, in recognition of the thriving Arab American population in Montgomery County. A Board resolution recognized the valuable contributions Arab Americans have made to virtually every aspect of American life—including science, medicine, education, business, culture and government.
*National Autism Awareness Month: In observing April as National Autism Awareness Month, the Board applauded the combined efforts of staff members, families, and many other individuals who actively contribute to the growth of students with autism. The school system reaffirmed its commitment to continually assessing and providing a comprehensive range of services to the more than 1,300 MCPS students challenged by autism.
* April 12–18 is being recognized as National Student Leadership Week. The week recognizes students for stepping into leadership positions and for their accomplishments and service. We will be recognizing the efforts of our own student leaders who are members of the Page ES Student Government Association (SGA) during this time.
Kindergarten orientation is scheduled for Friday, April 24th, at our school.  If you have or know of any child living in our community who will be turning five on or before September 1, 2009, please contact our school secretary, Mrs. Snapp, at 301-989-5672, to make an appointment for registration on this day.
Finally, on behalf of our staff, I want to wish you a nice and relaxing spring break that starts this Saturday, April 4, 2009.   Take some time to enjoy your children, the new flowers and blossoms, and, most importantly, have some FUN!  We will see you back on Tuesday, April 14, 2009.

An Amazing Slice of Pi!

On Friday, March 13, Mr. Selvin's math class celebrated Pi Day (a day early) to mark the calendar's closest approximation of the important ratio of pi.  Pi, represented by the Greek letter , is the relationship between a circle's diameter its circumference.  It is called an irrational number because its digits continue without end and no pattern has yet been discovered.

So far, computers have calculated pi to over 1 trillion digits!  The Guinness Book of World Records claims that someone has recited pi from memory to 67,000 digits!
Mr. Selvin challenged his math students to see how many they could remember and recite.  Congratulations to Asha Kodan, who bravely took the first challenge and was the first student to reach 20 digits.  Since then, several students have taken on the challenge and have come close to recalling 100 digits of pi.  As of this report, Aaron Kyei-Asare was the first student to reach the century mark and has gone on to 114 digits and Michael Hinnant holds the record with reciting 116 digits.

Mr. Selvin has thrown down the challenge that if a student at W. T. Page can recite from memory 314 digits of pi, he will reprise his agreement to dye his hair blond again!
