Welcome to March—March is National Women’s History Month. It is recognized by the MCPS Board of Education as a way to honor the countless contributions that American women have made throughout our history. As I have indicated to you before, MCPS supports education that is multicultural and believes that the history of all people should be incorporated in the curriculum throughout the year. We will be using Women's History Month to emphasize the historic and current impact of women in creating our uniquely diverse nation.
Last week, our students had the opportunity to hear author and former Page parent, Barry Louis Polisar, during as assembly provided by our PTA and cultural arts chair, Mrs. Sharon King.  His presentation was an absolute success and enjoyed by staff and students alike!  Students who earn the February 100 minutes reading party this Thursday, March 5th, will get the chance to win one of his autographed books in our drawing.
Black History night was also a success—standing room only!  I want to thank the many parents who came out last Thursday night to enjoy the many displays done by our students and the presentations students and staff made that evening.  Our guest speaker, Mr. Vernon Ricks and step team from Argyle Middle School, rounded out the evening with wonderful words and a great performance.  A big thanks once again to Mrs. Sheila Holmes for overseeing this celebration of history and heritage and to our staff for working so hard with the students to recognize diversity in our school.
Quick notes:
In conjunction with the School Nutrition Association, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley has declared March 2-March 6, 2009, as National School Breakfast Week.  During our morning announcements this week we will be highlighting the benefits of eating a good breakfast.  Research shows a positive correlation between eating a good breakfast and school attendance---it provides a child with alertness, good health, positive behavior and academic success. So, please ensure that your child is getting something nutritious either before leaving home or at school.
Attention parents who have NOT completed the race and ethnicity identification form: be on the look out for another form that came home yesterday (Monday). These are required by Maryland law and we need these completed and returned by Friday, March 6th.
Parents, please discuss the school rule of taking care of our school with your child, especially restroom etiquette.  We are finding that the children are not respecting our restrooms!  Mr. Johnson and Mr. Keng, building services staff, are working hard to maintain these areas per our School Improvement Plan and are seeing that overall, students are working hard to keep trash off the floor and faucets turned off. But recently, they have been finding that someone in the upper grade boys' bathroom is urinating on the floor and walls!  Please help us to keep our school clean!

Text Box: Pennies for Peace is part of a larger charity which builds schools, especially for girls, in Afghanistan and Pakistan and runs women's health and work programs.  $600 pays a teacher's salary for one year!  Maybe we can add a few teachers to their workforce.
You can learn more about these charities at www.penniesforpeace.org (children's) or www.ikat.org (adult).  Adults can learn more about this charity by reading Three Cups of Tea, which is a New York Times bestseller and a great book about the power of education.  Check out the bulletin board outside of the Media Center to learn more.

Students are invited to bring in any spare change or cash donations and drop them off in front of the media center any morning on their way in to school.

Text Box: The media tells girls how they have to look and act in order to be beautiful, accepted and successful. Boys are told how they should act in order to be men. The pressure to meet these expectations has produced harmful consequences—from low self-esteem and body issues in girls to damaging interactions between boys and girls.
Come to this FREE one-day conference! Workshops will provide interactive opportunities for girls, boys, parents and community members to define their voice, and identify next steps
