Text Box: Principal’s Penguin Post
Our first two weeks of school have been fantastic!  Thank you for preparing your children so well and for getting back into “the swing of things” so quickly!  I do have a few reminders to address, however, that need your support. If you notice, we had some painting completed over the summer. Our curbs were painted yellow; white direction arrows have been drawn in the car and bus lanes; and most importantly, our crosswalks have been painted and defined.  Please help us in teaching our students by crossing the bus lane or parking lot in the designated crosswalks.  I have noticed parents cutting across the front bus lanes to walk their child into the building.  We highly discourage this as vehicles are continually coming through and may not be alert to pedestrian traffic.
Next, please be aware that our school day begins at 8:50 am---doors open at 8:40 am for students not going to breakfast, with the expectation that students will be ready to begin instruction at 8:55 am. Students should not be here prior to 8:30 am unless they are a patrol or going to daycare.  Breakfast is served at 8:30--8:45 am—if your child is a walker, they must be here at 8:30 am to take advantage of breakfast. Please ensure that your child is walking through our doors by 8:45 am---THANK YOU!
The school discipline policy will be coming home with your child next Tuesday, September 16th, and will then be shared again with all parents at our annual Back to School night on September 23rd.  We are in the process of updating it—feel free to offer any comments or suggestions or attend any of our monthly school climate committee meetings.  Finally, please review the school rules with your child --they are as follows:
 1. Respect others and yourself
2. Follow directions
3. Always remember to keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
4. Take care of our school.
Finally, beginning next Monday, September 15th and continuing through October 15th, America will be honoring the many Hispanic Americans who have made and continue to make contributions to our nation by observing National Hispanic Heritage Month. Former President Ronald Reagan declared in 1988 that September become Hispanic Heritage Month.  This month commemorates the cultural, linguistic and racial diversity of the peoples of Spanish-speaking backgrounds who have come to the United States from more than 20 countries.  W.T. Page ES students will recognize and celebrate the Hispanic culture in our school and community throughout the month.

Text Box: Mrs. I’s. Counselor Corner
I am Mrs. Ichniowski, the counselor here at Page.  Staff, students and parents call me Mrs. “I”.  For those of you who our new to our school, I would like to answer a couple of frequently asked questions about the counseling program.
WHAT IS AN ELEMENTARY COUNSELING PROGRAM?
The counseling program is a developmental program for all students that emphasizes several areas of Academic Achievement, Educational Decision-making, and Personal and Social Development as a student.  The counseling program promotes successful schooling by helping students deal with greater independence, interact with other people, and become effective group members.  A positive concept of “self” as a student is critical to a child’s success in school.  The counseling program helps students feel good about their capacity to succeed in schools and strengthens their ability to meet the academic and social challenges of this environment.
 WHAT DO ELEMENTARY COUNSELORS DO?
Counselors deliver services in a variety of ways.  We conduct large group guidance activities (i.e. class meetings) with students and provide counseling to individuals and small groups of students who have problems in areas mentioned above.  These services generally are initiated by students or staff who recognize the need for a particular issue to be addressed.  Parents can also make requests for help.  In addition, we support the overall school program by designing and leading activities necessary for the effective implementation of the counseling program.  Such activities include kindergarten orientation, staff consultation, new student orientation, and participation in meetings to determine supports for children.
I enjoy meeting and talking with parents and I encourage you to get in touch with me to discuss any aspect of your child’s development.  If you would like to talk or meet with me, simply call the school number (301-989-5672) and ask to speak with Mrs. I.

What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the name of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. During Ramadan, all observant Muslims observe the Fast of Ramadan between dawn (fajr), and sunset (maghrib).

During Ramadan evenings, Muslims eat small meals and visit with friends and family. It is a time of worship and contemplation. A time to strengthen family and community ties.

Ramadan ends with the festival of Eid al-Fitr.
