Text Box: March of Dimes – Reading Program
Participate in the Reading Champions program for the March of Dimes! Students brought home large white envelopes for the program last week. Simply record the number of books OR pages read each night.  Get family members to sponsor your reading!  Every participant, regardless of fundraising, will receive a certificate of participation.  This reading counts for the 100 Minutes of Reading program as well!

The March of Dimes is a charity whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.  Visit marchofdimes.com to learn more!

I wanted to take the time to show my appreciation for a wonderful International Night—what a success!  If you were able to attend, you must agree that it was the BEST one yet!  I was so pleased to see the number of families who attended and participated by bringing food to share and by the wonderful display of costumes worn by students, parents and staff alike! I must also thank the following people for their endless work: Mrs. Cook-Anderson, Mrs. Jehn, Mrs. Arca, and Mrs. Ontiveros for the planning and execution of the event; Ms. Bowlby for the beautiful artwork displays; Ms. Kilgore, for the wonderful music; Mrs. Klingner, for her assistance with the video display and audio portions of the program; and finally, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Keng and Mr. Ramsay, for the set up and clean up.  Additionally, we had many parent and staff volunteers and exhibitors—thanks to you, too!

We are celebrating at Page ES! Recently, three of our very own teachers became National Board Certified Teachers. Mrs. Neff, Mrs. Watkins and Ms. Sherry have been notified that they successfully passed the rigorous program. For your information, the National Board Process is a research-based vehicle for increasing teacher capacity to impact student learning. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards® improves teaching and student learning. Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met high and rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review.  We are very proud of them--way to go!!

Please attend our PTA meeting tonight—we will have a special presentation from an expert in CyberSafety; the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the media center with babysitting available.  The Internet is a fabulous resource for education, entertainment, and more, but, it is not regulated or controlled by any one entity. Parents and schools have a responsibility to educate children about its safe and appropriate use. Also, it is imperative that parents and students report unsafe incidents to law enforcement so that offenders can be apprehended and prosecuted. Please report any incidents to the: CyberSafety Hotline: 301-279-3669 or at CyberSafety@mcpsmd.org

Text Box: Text Box:  Friendship Values of the Month – This month we have been talking about CARING.  Students have been hearing announcements about CARING and staff members have been “catching” students CARING so they can make the Friendship Value board and have their name announced.  Please try to talk about the importance of caring with your children.  It is so helpful when our values are reinforced at home.
CLASSROOM GUIDANCE UPDATE -  In first grade, the students learned last week about the difference between clean anger and dirty anger.  They learned that it is okay to get angry, but that you need to use clean anger to get your feelings out.  Kindergartners also talked about anger.  They learned how important it is to calm down first when you get angry.  Both grade levels talked about the MAGIC FORMULA.  Many of our first graders remembered this from last year.  The students all learned that using this formula is one way they can communicate their feelings – either upset, angry feelings or happy feelings.  We had class meetings in all of the classes to practice using the formula.
Please talk about this at home and remind them to use the MAGIC FORMULA – NAME…………….

Text Box: NEW DISMISSAL PROCEDURES FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER  FOR WALKERS/CAR RIDERS!
Last year’s indoor lineup worked fairly well but due to bus riders now being dismissed from the gym and the increase in the number of students getting picked up, our system needed to be revamped. Our first attempt was not as successful as we had hoped and we believe that we have come up with a smoother and more efficient indoor lineup procedure for the year. Please be patient with us as we are working on this together.
If you stay in your car, your child will be dismissed from the usual side entrance. All children will be sitting along the inside hall wall and will listen for their names to be called. Since the policy is to stay in your cars, please understand that those who choose to do so will have their child brought out to them. This allows for a smooth dismissal and no need to have anyone get wet in the process.
Please note that ONLY children who are getting into a car will be dismissed from the side exit. All others will need to be picked up from the side door. This eliminates the crowd and allows for those who follow the “Please stay in your car” policy to pick up their child quickly.
If your child walks home, they will be dismissed from the back kindergarten door only.
If you choose to park your car and pick up your child, you will need to pick them up from the back kindergarten door only.
If your child walks home with a middle school child, another adult, or waits for a patrol to get off duty, they will be dismissed
from the back kindergarten door only.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Ms. Berner or Mrs. Dean.
