Parent-teacher conferences will be held today, Tuesday, November 11 and Wednesday, November 12, 2008. All MCPS students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be dismissed early on these days.  The parent-teacher conference is an opportunity for parents to spend some one-on-one time with their child's teacher to discuss how their child is doing in school. The conference also can help parents and teachers discover ways that they can work together to support the child's interests and needs.
Here are some things for parents to think about before arriving at the conference:
Typically, a conference will last 15 to 20 minutes and may include a discussion of classroom work, assessments and any extra support your child may need.
Ask to see examples of your child's work. Discuss whether your child is on track for advanced coursework. Are there enrichment opportunities or other extra support that may benefit him/her?
Ask how you can support learning at home, especially with homework.
Aside from report cards, ask about the best ways to keep up to date on your child's progress.
Be sure to bring up your child's special interests and abilities, along with any special health or family concerns.
Contact the school in advance if you need an interpreter, or bring someone who can interpret for you.
If you have more to talk about than your assigned time will allow, ask for a follow-up meeting with the teacher.
During the month of November, MCPS students will be celebrating National American Indian Heritage Month. The purpose of National American Indian Heritage Month is to honor and recognize the original peoples of this land. "American Indian Day" was first declared by the State of New York in 1916, just two decades after the closing of "the last frontier" in the west. Ironically this original celebration of Native Americans occurred at the same time as the birth of the "Indian" stereotype in the new film industry. Seventy-four years would pass until a national month long recognition of Native Americans was declared by President George Bush. National American Indian Heritage Month was first celebrated in 1990. W.T. Page staff will support this effort through meaningful study in the curriculum throughout the year and in appropriate activities during the month.
Quote of the week:  212° Commitment: “There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient.  When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results….” Kenneth Blanchard

Text Box: NEW DISMISSAL PROCEDURES FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER  FOR WALKERS/CAR RIDERS!
Last year’s indoor lineup worked fairly well but due to bus riders now being dismissed from the gym and the increase in the number of students getting picked up, our system needed to be revamped. Our first attempt was not as successful as we had hoped and we believe that we have come up with a smoother and more efficient indoor lineup procedure for the year. Please be patient with us as we are working on this together.
If you stay in your car, your child will be dismissed from the usual side entrance. All children will be sitting along the inside hall wall and will listen for their names to be called. Since the policy is to stay in your cars, please understand that those who choose to do so will have their child brought out to them. This allows for a smooth dismissal and no need to have anyone get wet in the process.
Please note that ONLY children who are getting into a car will be dismissed from the side exit. All others will need to be picked up from the side door. This eliminates the crowd and allows for those who follow the “Please stay in your car” policy to pick up their child quickly.
If your child walks home, they will be dismissed from the back kindergarten door only.
If you choose to park your car and pick up your child, you will need to pick them up from the back kindergarten door only.
If your child walks home with a middle school child, another adult, or waits for a patrol to get off duty, they will be dismissed
from the back kindergarten door only.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Ms. Berner or Mrs. Dean.
