Text Box: Principal’s Penguin Post

Parents/guardians of students attending schools in MCPS will be asked to participate in the online 2008-2009 Parent Satisfaction Survey.  The survey collects information that will be used to help MCPS improve its services to students and their families.  All answers are completely confidential.  The survey will be available November 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008.  Parents of all MCPS students will receive a postcard in early November. The postcards include: (1) instructions about how to access and complete the online English and Spanish versions of the parent survey, and (2) how to obtain a translated copy of the survey in Chinese, Korean, French, Vietnamese and Amharic.  If you have any questions, please contact me at the school or online at http:/montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/sharedaccountability/research

’Tis the season for the sniffles, coughs and flu….When your child is sick, please keep him/her home from school.  I would love for all of our students to be here every day (after all, we are striving for 98% attendance this year!), BUT sometimes this is not possible.  Keeping your child home when he/she is sick not only benefits your child, but the other children and staff in the classroom at school.  Here are some important signs of illness to look out for:

1.   A temperature of more than 100 degrees taken orally
8.     Earache
2.   Nausea or vomiting
9.     Thick, yellowish discharge from nose
3.   Stomachache
10.   Sore throat
4.   Diarrhea
11.   Rash or infection of the skin
5.   Pale or flushed face
12.   Red or pink eyes
6.   Headache
13.   Loss of energy or decrease in activity
7.   Persistent cough

If your child has any of these symptoms when it is time for school, it is best that he/she stay home.  Most childhood illnesses are over soon and no cause for worry.  But, if symptoms are severe or persist for more than 24 hours, you should contact your private source of medical care.

Can you believe it is already near the end of October? Since fall weather is here, please have your child dress accordingly.  You may want to watch or listen for the weather forecast because there will be days your child may need to wear a jacket, long or short sleeves, or even long pants. Also, remember to label all outerwear and personal items with your child’s name. If your child is missing any items, you are free to check the Lost and Found that is located on the stage ramp behind the All Purpose Room.

Quote of the week:  212° Commitment= “There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient.  When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results. –Kenneth Blanchard

Text Box: Due to the Election on November 4th, the PTA meeting normally held on the first Tuesday of the month has been rescheduled to November 10th.  Please mark your calendars accordingly.
We hope to see you there!

Text Box: I am presently visiting classes to work with students weekly in grade K and 1.  This is an update for you about the things your children are learning.  During my first visit, we talked about what it means to be a good friend, listened to a story, and discussed good friendship behaviors which would promote positive social interactions.  Kindergarten parents – ask your kids what it means to do a friend check.
In grade 1, this past week we discussed handling big and small problems.  Students learned about identifying situations in which they may need help and know where they can get help when needed.  First grade parents – ask your kids about the big rock and small rock.

Text Box: NEW DISMISSAL PROCEDURES FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER  FOR WALKERS/CAR RIDERS!
Last year’s indoor lineup worked fairly well but due to bus riders now being dismissed from the gym and the increase in the number of students getting picked up, our system needed to be revamped. Our first attempt was not as successful as we had hoped and we believe that we have come up with a smoother and more efficient indoor lineup procedure for the year. Please be patient with us as we are working on this together.
If you stay in your car, your child will be dismissed from the usual side entrance. All children will be sitting along the inside hall wall and will listen for their names to be called. Since the policy is to stay in your cars, please understand that those who choose to do so will have their child brought out to them. This allows for a smooth dismissal and no need to have anyone get wet in the process.
Please note that ONLY children who are getting into a car will be dismissed from the side exit. All others will need to be picked up from the side door. This eliminates the crowd and allows for those who follow the “Please stay in your car” policy to pick up their child quickly.
If your child walks home, they will be dismissed from the back kindergarten door only.
If you choose to park your car and pick up your child, you will need to pick them up from the back kindergarten door only.
If your child walks home with a middle school child, another adult, or waits for a patrol to get off duty, they will be dismissed
from the back kindergarten door only.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Ms. Berner or Mrs. Dean.
