Text Box: Principal’s Penguin Post
Welcome back to a new school year!  I hope everyone had a well-deserved break with lots of book-reading, swimming, sleeping in----essentially, doing all those things you can never do during the school year!
I would like to take this opportunity to provide you with an update on some important school procedures.  Again this year, your child will be bringing home a special “Communicator” folder.  Each grade level has a different color.  Tuesdays continue to be our designated day to send home the Ice Page and any other school/county news.  (Individual teachers will probably be sending home other important items, homework, etc. throughout the week, so please get into the habit to check your child’s folder every evening.)  Backpack articles or those flyers from non-MCPS businesses and groups, will be sent home four times per year with the first one being sent home on Tuesday, September 9, 2008.
Just a reminder to those folks completing or re-submitting FARMS (Free and Reduced Meals) applications: please submit your application prior to September 30th to get the process started or to maintain continuing coverage.
We appreciate the funding and support Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has received from the County Council in these tight budget times.  However, the funding MCPS received was less than the Board of Education's requested amount.  As a result of this current fiscal situation, it may become necessary for staffing changes to occur in some schools if enrollment comes in below projection and doesn't justify the staffing that has been allocated.  MCPS staffing allocations are based on projected enrollment.  I want to inform you that at this time, we are currently meeting (and exceeding in some cases) our projected enrollment.  If there is a need to make an adjustment in staffing based on final enrollment counts, I will do my best to minimize the impact of these necessary adjustments.  I will keep you informed and alert you of any changes that may occur at our school.
Finally, this is going to be a GREAT year---the entire staff will be kicking up the heat and operating at 212 º in everything we do!  On behalf of the staff here at W.T. Page ES, I wish you and your children the very best for a successful and productive school year!
Quote of the week: “At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And, with boiling water, comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive.”…..Sam Parker and Mac Anderson

Text Box: COUNSELING PROGRAM UPDATE -

MCPS offers a variety of magnet programs for students who wish to focus on a particular area of study.
At the elementary level there are 16 programs designed around a theme or focus. One is a countywide primary (Grades 1 and 2) gifted and talented magnet available through application and selection. Four others are foreign language immersion models in either French or Spanish. The other 11 are school wide special focus programs available only to students within the home school boundaries.
At the middle school level there are two program models offered at three sites. Each site draws from a defined set of clusters. Students apply for these programs in January of their fifth grade year and transfers are granted for those students accepted.                                                                                                                No Put Downs – Pass It Around

Text Box: A Message from the President

On behalf of the Page Elementary Parent Teacher Association (PTA), I would like to welcome you and your children to the 2008-2009 school year.  My children, Catherine, 5th grade, and Jack, 2nd grade, have been at Page for the past two years and each year has been better than the last!  We have a great school thanks to our devoted principal, wonderful teachers and hard-working staff.  Our PTA also helps to make our school a great place to learn.  We sponsor activities for the children and support our teachers in many ways.  We hope your family will join the PTA!  Joining the PTA does not mean that you have to attend meetings or make a big commitment to spending time at school.  We know most parents can’t do that.  But becoming a Page PTA member sends a powerful message of support to our teachers.  It will help you stay connected to what is going on in school.  But most importantly, it will show your children that you are a partner in their education.  And parents who are involved have children who achieve!
Please consider joining the PTA on Back to School Night.  And if you have already joined, thank you!!    Patricia Scully – PTA President

What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the name of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. During Ramadan, all observant Muslims observe the Fast of Ramadan between dawn (fajr), and sunset (maghrib).

During Ramadan evenings, Muslims eat small meals and visit with friends and family. It is a time of worship and contemplation. A time to strengthen family and community ties.

Ramadan ends with the festival of Eid al-Fitr.
